Good review of the good old game. It’s a pity that the series has reached a dead end (it has rushed into overdrive, to be more precise). I believe that the new part (if there is one) should rethink this game. A simple remake won’t do the trick. Thanks for the quality review!
Amazing release. To be honest, I didn’t even know that the game originally had blood and dismemberment. I wonder if this original build is on their shelf?)) I remember when I had Sonya 1st, that I and my dad played part 1 with great delight. The theme with realistic damage (to some extent) is very satisfying, when the bot does not immediately die, but crawls or tries to do something else while wounded. I came across it in dubbing (provided that the English voice acting was included for the Germans). And in my experience, in addition to MoH, I remember I only played Quake 2 in 1st person then.
Oh, damn it, there was a time when we played shooters on consoles (back when the PC was MAIN in this topic. ), and the Medal FOR Courage was very memorable then.I remember the setting, which, as the author rightly noted, is different from most of my colleagues in the industry, remember Quake, DOOM, Duke Nukem, Alien Resurrection/Trilogy, etc.n. Now the number of WW2-themed shooters of all quality levels is off the charts, but then..
Yes, and not just the setting, as they say, what are the various and memorable missions worth, here you have the destruction of a Wehrmacht super-weapon, a reference to a real-life monster weapon – Dora, and also a prototype of guided missiles (again a reference to the Reich V-2 missiles), and sabotage at a factory for the production of poisonous gases, a foray into the SS castle, where these Aryan knights are still in full paraded in armor, and sabotage to destroy fuel in Africa, and also with elements of social stealth, using fake documents, using the cover of a photographer, and also the final missions in the second part – with these dogs dancing on their hind legs and MP-40 in… paws and robots – Panzerknacker :).
The musical design is, yes, damn good – a symphony orchestra playing in the background, the sharp cries of German soldiers in battle, distant machine-gun bursts and rifle shots, explosions, the noise of armored vehicles, the voice acting of weapons – everything sounds amazingly pleasant and authentic and pleases the ear.I would also like to remember the battles on the streets of Paris, where the roar of gunfire is complemented by the amazing Each Night He Comes To Me by Michael Giacchino.
The graphics are not without flaws, but, remembering the power of the console, I just want to shake the hands of the developers as a sign of respect for the work and results they produced. The settings in the missions are beautiful, I especially liked the city levels, and the mission in Schmerzen – damn, it’s just..
Well, and we can’t help but remember the signature system of wounds in the game. A hit in the arm, after which a soldier grabs the wounded one with his healthy hand, or in the leg, after which he sometimes falls backwards, and sometimes jumps up again on his healthy one (it seemed realistic, but it seemed so comical then :)), a hit in the head was fatal (almost always), and even a helmet, after getting hit in it, honestly flew off the head, and also, if you are very lucky (and the enemy soldier is not), when you hit the groin, the enemy again amusingly stretched his legs and grabbed his, ummm… groin and for some time was completely incapacitated. Yes, and in general, the people in the game behaved quite convincingly in battle, and their animation looked very believable (certainly at that time).
And then, watching this video, after so many years, I find out that dismemberment was also planned in the game, it’s amazing, honestly! As for me, they did absolutely the right thing by abandoning such an element – it’s not the right format, after all. Although I would really like to try playing with a similar “mod” in Medalka, to please, so to speak, the “inner sadist” a little :).
Summarizing all the memories, and everything I have written about this excellent game, I want to say only one thing – it is amazingly good, and it also extremely successfully complemented the line of shooters on PS 1 as an excellent and serious (considering it specifically as a game), a project about the Second World War.
In a separate line, I would like to express a huge thank you to the author of the video for all the positive emotions from watching, and nostalgia for the good old days, with greener grass (a comic metaphor), and better, well-developed games (absolutely seriously), in which they really put their SOUL. I also learned something new about a game that I thought I knew everything about. Excellent episode, told with high quality, to the point and a pleasure to watch, thank you and all the best!
